Obituary for Violet Smith-Mapletoft

Violet Mae Smith-Mapletoft, 92, of Oxford, formerly of Marine City, entered eternal life on Sunday, May 2, 2021. Violet was born on February 23, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan and was raised on a 110 acre “all-organic” farm in Marine City by her parents, John and Lela Mapletoft.
Growing up, she loved to ride her horses and play piano accompanied by her father on his violin. While attending high school, she extended her talents in her school band by playing the saxophone. Violet became a hardworking, determined woman, raising her five children. She was self-assured in life and after raising her children, she moved all over the country, settling in Alaska for 23 years. While in Alaska, Violet held a long-standing career working in a nursing home.
When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed traveling, playing golf, shuffleboard, and bowling. She had an out-going spirit that could light up a room and loved meeting and sharing time with people, telling stories and helping others in any way she could. After retiring from her work, she moved back to the lower 48’s in 2015 to spend her twilight years.
Violet is survived by her children, Robert Patterson, Sandra Barney, Sylvia (Mark) Miner, Audrey Burns and Kathy (Ken) Jones; thirteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Jack (Mickey) Mapletoft, and George (Beverly) Mapletoft. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ernie (Norma) Mapletoft; and a sister, Barbara Ortego.
